That’s a fairly standard answer, which isn’t necessarily because you can’t do yoga while you’re pregnant, it’s just that the place you went to doesn’t want the liability.
This has some info on continuing your practice while pregnant:
Some places also offer specific classes for pregnant women, so check around for that.
Iyengar Yoga is probably not the right yoga to do during pregnancy (I am a fomer Hatha yoga teacher and have taught pregnancy yoga too) There are certain poses that are not good for pregnant women. See if there are any studios or clubs nearby that offer Yoga for Pregnancy (a lot of times hospitals have programs like this). You could get a pregnancy yoga video in the meantime (look on Amazon.com) . There are too many to mention here. Good luck, and by all means do keep up your practice, it will be invaluable as the pregnancy develops.
Yoga is great for pregnancy! I did it the whole time my last pregnancy. And, this one so far. He’s right though, there are certain excersizes you can’t do. I bought a book from Borders, I’m sure you can find it online too. It’s called:
Yoga for Pregnancy
The best thing is the book is divided into sections for your first, second, and third trimester. It will tell you in a circled number at the top of the page what trimester it’s good for. Some are good for the whole pregnancy. They even have pictures and all the women are either pregnant or mom’s themselves :))
This combined with the modifed pelvic rock (just rocked on an excersize ball) really helped move my son into position. And, by the time I was in labor I hardly had to push at all. The nurses said the only way that happens is staying active in pregnancy. And, pelvic rocks is the best thing to avoid a position problem.
Don’t stop anything! Keep as active as you feel you can. But, don’t over due it. Don’t make yourself strain that’s where the problems come in. Next time at your OBGYN ask about being active and tell your normal routine. Your doc will be able to tell you if it’s okay. But, yoga is the best!
